about

"Woodlands" came about from my love of trees and nature. I grew up where we had to cut wood for heat in the winter so I spent a lot of time in the woods year-round.

I used to be able to identify all of the trees by their bark or leaves. My dad and I would look for the dead or dying ones and fall them for our wood-burning stove. I was in charge of splitting, stacking, and hauling brush away to burn on a pile, amongst other things. Dad ran the saw, split, and stacked too. He would say "wood heats you twice - once when you're cutting it, and again when you're burning it." True. I lived it.

There was a lot of downtime during those times too. I was able to look around and marvel at the forests. I could see, year after year, the smaller trees trying to grow. I'd watch their progress. We'd let them live and clear the old ones out of their way so they could flourish. A tree under another was often a tree that couldn't grow. We helped them.

Now, long after those days, the small trees are probably big ones. I still love the trees and the times I had in the woods. I wrote the songs about them - the trees and the times.
